Psychological Versus Physical: The Downfall of the Well-Being of Our Seniors

Psychological Versus Physical: The Downfall of the Well-Being of Our Seniors

July 11, 2017

Many believe that there is a direct correlation between the quality of ones life and their ultimate well-being.

A recent study, published in the BMC Geriatrics journal proved this point. The study focused on the psychological factors rather than the physical ones, as being the “biggest culprit [in lowering the] well-being in one’s senior years”. In other words, psychological issues play a significant role in the life span of our seniors.

The study, lead by Professor Karl-Heinz Ladwig of Germany, and his colleagues chose more than 3600 subjects ranging in age  from 65-90. Each participant filled out a detailed questionnaire.

“The analysis showed that factors such as low income, physical inactivity, multimorbidity, depression, anxiety and sleep problems” greatly affect the seniors chosen for the study.

Professor Karl-Heinz Ladwig states that “Aging itself is not inevitably associated with a decline in mood and quality of life. It is rather the case that psychosocial factors such as depression or anxiety impair subjective well-being”.
