At Heather Glen Senior Living our commitment to providing exceptional care is embodied by the dedicated professionals that make up our team, and this especially includes our Nursing Supervisor, Mia McGowan. With a career driven by personal connection and a passion for senior care, Mia’s journey to her leadership position is both inspiring and impactful, and we’re truly excited about the work she’s already been able to do at Heather Glen Senior Living.
A journey fueled by personal inspiration
For Mia, nursing is more than just a job—it’s a professional calling that was largely inspired by her mother, Andrea McGowan, the Executive Director at Heather Glen Senior Living.
“She was always able to see my potential and knew I had the skills for the job,” Mia shares. “Once I became a nurse, I always hoped I could one day be as knowledgeable as her in this field.”
Her early experiences as a nursing aide and her clinical rotations during nursing school solidified her passion for working with seniors—setting her on a path to become a trusted leader at Heather Glen Senior Living.
A day in the life of a nursing supervisor
As Nursing Supervisor, Mia navigates a dynamic and challenging role with grace and expertise. Each day begins with team meetings to discuss resident care plans and any emerging concerns. Heather Glen Senior Living is renowned for its exceptional care standards, something Mia and her team uphold diligently, and through meticulous planning, proactive communication and a commitment to continuous improvement, they ensure that every resident receives the highest quality of care tailored to their unique needs. Central to Mia’s approach is fostering strong relationships with residents and their families.
“I think the most important part is making sure they are always being updated with any new changes as a lack of communication or follow through breaks trust,” she emphasizes “It’s important for families to feel confident in me as their nurse for their loved ones.”
Reflecting on the past and looking toward the future
In the ever-evolving field of healthcare, Mia also understands how crucial it is to prioritize ongoing learning and professional development for herself and her team.
“Being a nurse means you never stop learning,” she remarks. “Whether that be from continuing education or training, I am always doing research from reputable backed sites to ensure my knowledge is up to date with standard practice. I find joy in sharing new information with the care staff, and it makes me happy when I see them utilize new skills with the residents.”
Her dedication to ensuring a high standard of care leaves a lasting impact on everyone she serves, and when asked about the future of senior care, Mia emphasized the importance of adaptability and innovation. She believes that Heather Glen Senior Living can continue to excel by embracing evidence-based practices, providing comprehensive training and fostering a culture of open-mindedness to meet evolving resident needs effectively.
“What may work for one resident, will not work for another,” she explains. “Heather Glen Senior Living has always been amazing at coordinating different ideas for residents to be both safe and satisfied.”
Leading with compassion
As Nursing Supervisor, Mia exemplifies the spirit of excellence and compassion that defines Heather Glen Senior Living, and her unwavering dedication and leadership not only enrich the lives of residents, but also inspire her colleagues to strive for greatness in senior care. As Heather Glen Senior Living continues to innovate and evolve, Mia remains at the forefront, shaping a future where every resident’s needs are always met with dignity and respect.
“As long as the residents are happy and comfortable, it leaves me knowing I did my job,” Mia explains. “That alone is a successful day for me.”
