The Morning Call recently published an article entitled “Alzheimer’s Aid By Design. A designer by the name of Theresa Clement developed what is called Design Prescription, a program and tutorial that teaches families and friends of Alzheimer’s patients to adapt their surroundings to accommodate their progressing disease.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in three senior citizens dies with dementia.
Alzheimer’s, a disease affecting one’s memory is the most common form of dementia. “Alzheimer’s doesn’t affect just memory. Many people with the disease also have challenges perceiving colors, contrasts and depth, and organizing visual fields”, write Samantha Melamed from The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Theresa suggests removing rugs from spaces, painting walls in the bathroom a different color than the toilet, to prevent messy accidents and keeping essentials in plain sight, so patients are not frustrated when looking for something.
On her blog, Theresa frequently shares design tactics that are minimal, but make a huge difference. You can also follow Theresa’s blog: My Fix It Up Life.
